Strawberries: know how the water goes in and out.

With strawberries on substrate, it is all about water quality: is the EC not too high, is the pH right and is the substrate moist enough? WolkyTolky shows it for every irrigation cycle, wherever you are.

What to watch

What matters with strawberries

1

Drain that is not right

Drain at the first irrigation cycle means the plants stayed too wet overnight. No drain, or drain that comes too late, points to too little water. For every cycle you see what goes in and what comes out, so you can adjust straight away.

2

EC that climbs too high

If the EC in the drain rises, the plant takes up water less easily. See the EC in and out, and step in before it becomes a problem.

3

pH that is off

The pH of the incoming and outgoing water determines how well the plant takes up nutrients. You see a deviation straight away.

4

Substrate that is too dry or too wet

Measure the volumetric water content (VWC) and the EC in the substrate itself, plus the temperature. That shows whether the substrate is moist enough and whether the EC in the root zone is right.

What you measure

This is what you see on your phone

All measurements are in the same app and the same portal, with alarms you set yourself.

  • Drain %, flow in and flow out per irrigation cycle
  • EC in and out
  • pH in and out
  • Volumetric water content (VWC), EC and temperature in the substrate
  • Temperature and humidity (for VPD)

How to set it up for strawberries

  1. 1

    Basis: Drain Monitoring

DMS PHEC measures drain, flow, pH and EC in the incoming and outgoing water. Only need drain and flow? Then DMS Basic is enough.

    Drain Monitoring →

  2. 2

    Add the substrate itself

With DMS PHEC PRO you also measure the volumetric water content (VWC), EC and temperature in the substrate itself: you see whether it is moist enough.

    Drain Monitoring →

  3. 3

    Add climate

Add temperature and humidity for VPD, and optionally Leaf-to-air to see heat coming.

Frequently asked questions about strawberries

Can I see if the EC is too high?

Yes. With DMS EC or DMS PHEC you measure the EC in the incoming and outgoing water. With PHEC PRO you also measure the EC in the substrate itself, along with the volumetric water content and temperature.

How do I see if my substrate is moist enough?

With DMS PHEC PRO you measure the volumetric water content (VWC) in the substrate. Together with the drain, that gives a good picture of your irrigation.

Does Drain Monitoring also work for table-top strawberries?

Yes, the system is meant for substrate cultivation of strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and redcurrants. We are happy to discuss how it fits your setup.

Can I set alarms?

Yes, for too little incoming water, too little drain or drain that starts too late. With the pH and EC sensors you can also set alarms on acidity and EC value.
